GARDEN IN A BOX TO CELEBRATE 20 YEARS OF WATERWISE GARDENS IN 2023

By Elisabeth D. Bowman, Resource Central

Back in 2003, local nonprofit Resource Central piloted a program to help conserve water and transform the prevailing perception of a Colorado yard from traditional turf to beautiful low-water gardens. The Garden In A Box program delighted participants and soon became a sought-after way to become a waterwise wizard. Although it started with just 14 participants in 2003, Resource Central distributed almost 9,000 Garden In A Box kits in partnership with 34 water utilities in 2022.

The genius of Garden In A Box is in the thoughtfully curated plant selections, professionally designed plant-by-number maps, and the comprehensive materials that accompany each garden kit. These DIY garden kits allow anyone to join in water conservation efforts, regardless of gardening expertise. They also provide vital habitat for pollinators and other beneficial wildlife.

As part of its 20th anniversary in 2023, Garden In A Box is bringing back some of the most popular gardens from the past few years. One returning favorite is Splendid Seasons, a collaborative design with Northern Water and Denver Botanic Gardens. It is the largest low-water garden kit at 200 square feet and will include a new combined plant-by-number map for a 400 sq.-ft. garden.

Garden In A Box is also revamping one of its very first gardens. This anniversary garden is designed to fit in that awkward strip of grass between sidewalks and streets or in medians. “We are so excited to celebrate 20 years of waterwise gardening and look forward to sharing more information about the 2023 season at the beginning of the year,” says Senior Program Manager Melanie Stolp.

A large number of participants return for more gardens like Cole Brennan of Denver: “I’m a beginner gardener and this was such a perfect way to jump in that we are planning on converting new sections of our front yard with Garden In A Box each year.”
