Three water main replacement projects are scheduled for construction in the summer of 2021.
On March 26, the Board of Directors approved the construction contract for the following three water main replacement projects. The contract was awarded to Levi Contractors, Inc. in the amount of $1,095,832. Levi Contractors, Inc. has worked for the District on several previous water main replacement projects. More updates will follow on these projects once the District receives the construction schedule from the contractor.
Capital Improvement Projects Scheduled for 2020:
- S. Depew Street – This project will replace 1,900 feet of 8-inch CIP with 8-inch PVC in S. Depew Street between S. Platte Canyon Road and W. Canyon Trail. This project is located in the Columbine Hills subdivision and includes a culvert crossing.
- W. Alder Way – This project will replace 700 feet of 6-inch CIP with 6-inch PVC in W. Alder Way between S. Depew Street and W. Alder Avenue in the Columbine Hills subdivision.
- S. Newland Circle – This project will replace 1,700 feet of 6-inch CIP with 6-inch PVC pipe in the S. Newland Circle loop off of W. Leawood Drive.
All of the 2021 projects involve replacing cast iron pipe that has advanced levels of electrolysis-caused corrosion.
Two of the three projects are located within the Columbine Hills Subdivision, which contains some of the oldest water mains in the District. The pipe scheduled for replacement was installed in 1960 and was not protected from corrosive soils, which is the current practice. The third project is located in the Leawood Subdivision, where a substantial amount of older cast iron pipe is also located. Combined, eight breaks have occurred on these three water mains, including four that occurred in 2019.
Due to the rapidly changing state and local policies regarding COVID-19, the District will not conduct in-person Informational Pop-Ups this construction season. Communication with residents in the affected subdivisions will be handled via mail, social media, or door-to-door interaction.
